Richard and JoAnne DeMeules have been making handcrafted hardwood boxes in the Northwest since 1977.
Born and raised in Seattle, they both attended the University of Washington and were married in 1970.
During the bicentennial, they traveled for 6 months throughout the United States, Mexico and Canada. Upon returning, they began working with wood, inspired by a marquetry master they had met on their travels. Marquetry was soon replaced by the use of solid exotic woods glued together to create patterns. They made everything from cribbage boards to hour glasses and eventually developed a line of unique boxes.
In 1980 their daughter, Azure was born and with her, a desire to move out of the city and their small working space. Over the next four years, they planned, built and moved into their log home and separate workshop on 5 acres in Redmond, Washington, near what is now the Microsoft campus.
After 30 years, Richard and JoAnne still enjoy their work and continue to develop new ideas and create one of a kind treasures.
